GERD surgery does not reduce risk of esophageal cancer
The risk for esophageal cancer remains very high even 15 years or more after patients have surgery to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease, a study found. "We expected a decreased risk of cancer with increased time after surgery, but we didn't find it. There is no evidence to support the idea that antireflux surgery prevents cancer development of the esophagus," the lead researcher said. |

Study links high vitamin D levels, lower colon cancer risk
A study of more than 520,000 Europeans has found a correlation between high concentrations of vitamin D and a decreased risk of colon cancer. Researchers report that individuals with elevated vitamin D levels were less likely to develop the cancer by as much as 40% compared with those with much lower levels.

Study: Surgery, omeprazole both benefit GERD patients
Researchers say patients with severe gastroesophageal reflux disease can choose to either undergo surgery or take omeprazole to treat their condition because both options have been found effective. The researchers found that while surgery was better overall at relieving GERD symptoms, long-term use of omeprazole can help avoid postoperative complications. Reuters (12/28)
